Selena Gomez is getting personal about how therapy has helped her work through the issues she’s “sensitive” about.
The singer, actress, and Rare Beauty founder spoke to Allure for their cover story about how she deals with trauma from body shaming.
In the interview, Selena said that she uses dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). Cleveland Clinic describes DBT as a type of talk therapy that has been “specially adapted for people who experience emotions very intensely.”
Selena says that it helps her with “peeling away layers” of things that are bothering her.
“I got stung by a person saying I was fat. Why is that [emotion] coming up?” Selena said in the interview as an example of one of the things that she’s worked on in therapy. “I’ve dealt with a lot of weight issues in my life, and that’s something I’m very sensitive to.”
Selena said that through DBT, she’s been able to get to the root of why this issue is something that gets to her so much. She said, “Oh, now I understand, that’s stemming from that one time when I was going through some medical stuff and I had gained weight…”
Selena was diagnosed with lupus in 2013, leading to chronic pain as well as dexterity issues, chemotherapy, and a kidney transplant.
