Mental Health Tips: One needs to be more empathetic and understanding towards someone struggling with depression.
DEPRESSION is one of the most common mental health disorders across the globe. It is a common disorder that involves experiencing depressed moods or loss of interest in activities for a long period of time. It is different from normal mood swings and feelings about everyday life. It can affect all aspects of life, including relationships with family, friends, and community. It can result from or lead to problems at school and work, as per WHO.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), an estimated 3.8 percent of the population experience depression, including 5 percent of adults and 5.7 percent of adults older than 60 years. Approximately 280 million people in the world have depression. Depression is about 50 percent more common among women than among men. Worldwide, more than 10 percent of pregnant women and women who have just given birth experience depression.
More than 700 000 people die due to suicide every year. Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death in 15 to 29-year-olds. A person going through depression is already going through hard times in their lives, so they do not require much from people near them other than their support. So, if you know a person who is experiencing depression, avoid saying the below-mentioned things to them.
1. Just go out and have fun, you will forget about it!
Instead say: I would love to spend some time with you. Let’s go out and grab a bite.
2. Will you stop that constant whining?
Instead say: I can see that you are struggling, and I’m here to lend an ear.
3. A lot of people are worse off than you are.
Instead say: I’m sorry that you’re hurting. What can I do for you?
4. Just deal with it and smile more.
Instead say: You don’t have to deal with this alone, I’m here.
5. You’re bringing me down.
Instead say: I’m not going to leave you or abandon you, let me know what I can do.
6. Believe me, I know how you feel. I was depressed once for several days.
Instead say: I can’t begin to imagine how you must be feeling, but I’m here to listen.
7. What do you even have to be depressed about?
Instead say: I’m sorry I didn’t realize you were struggling, I’m here now.
8. I thought you were stronger than that.
Instead say: I believe in you, and I know you can get through this.
9. It’s just a phase, it’ll pass.
Instead say: I will be here every step of the way. You can bank on me.
10. But it’s all in your mind.
Instead say: It’s not your fault. don’t beat yourself up for it.
