There have been reports that Honda has confirmed that the Side Camera Mirror found in the Honda e urban electric car will be a standard when the car is launched for the common market. This technology has been seen in Honda’s prototype version of the vehicle & brings forth major benefits for safety, styling, refinement & aerodynamics of the vehicle.
Conventional side mirrors are replaced with compact cameras which display a live image on two 6″ inch screens on each end of the dashboard.
The strategically placed screens provide a very natural feel & provide an optimal field of vision for the driver.
This system enables the car to maintain a very clean & simplistic design language & is much more aesthetically pleasing.
Alongside improving the visibility range for the driver, this design manages to cut off aerodynamic drag by up to 90% when compared to standard door mirrors. This drag reduction results in a 3.8% increase in the overall performance of the vehicle. Adding to it, there will be a significant cut on wind noise when compared to normal side mirrors when the vehicle is traveling at a higher speed.
The driver is also presented with two ranges of views where they can choose between a ‘normal view’ & a ‘wide view’ which can be selected in the vehicle settings. The modes can help with increasing the total field of vision by up to 10%.
There has been a wide range of tests to develop the cameras so that the cameras can provide optimal visibility throughout all weather conditions without any distortions in the image provided.
